Find Franky

"Reminds me a bit of click the button"

submission: Find Franky
date: January 13, 2009

Its a nice game, altho there are a few problems.

First, it is pretty easy. Just moving your mouse around the screen until it changes to a hand will allow you to find him very easily. Other than that, clicking anything round or blue tends to find him pretty fast too.

Not to mention that you havent disabled tab, so players can just use the tab key to highlight where he is immediately (for future reference, on your "franky" objects, use the code "this.tabEnabled = false;")

It is a good start, and with some practice you could probably refine this sort of game to be really challenging, as well as fun :)

The Cell 2

"Dissapointing"

submission: The Cell 2
date: January 12, 2009

I remembered playing your first game, and whilst it was short, it was at least fairly intuitive and logical. I was hoping that this would build on the strengths of the first game, adding more complex and involved puzzles.

Sorry to say I was really dissapointed.

The first MAJOR issue I had with the game was the pixel clicking. Seriously, there were not one, not two, but THREE items that required near pixel perfect clicks in order to pick up (the apple, the bottle and the knife), not to mention that the graphics for the items were so small that you wouldnt even notice them.

The game logic was also way off. You confuse the player by putting in this massive hole with something shiney at the bottom of it, yet this is not even a part of the game, it is just a distraction. When the items you expect us to pick up that actually start the escape process are so small, confusing the player with the big hole is just stupid. Dont even think that you are "increasing the difficulty", there is a massive difference between something being a n enjoyable challenge, and something being so frustrating that you give up after 5 minutes of random clicking.

I personally have an issue with the control system. Only being able to interract with items you are near to is fine, but the whole "Use/Look" system is poorly implemented because it is lacking the mouseover tooltips that are commonly associated with it (ie Just hovering your mouse over items in the room will bring up the text to let you know it is an item you can intereact with). The system in your previous game was probably much better, as it highlighted the areas in the room that you could interract with (altho the "Would you like to X in the X? Yes / No" option was a little pointless).

Also the button that is meant to take u back to the menu from the game is broken, clicking on it just leaves you on a blank screen. After giving up in frustration, I had to restart the game again in order to check the walkthrough to see if it was even possible.

Sorry if I am sounding overly critical, however I would like to think that as a fellow "point and click adventure" game developer, I am in a position to offer you some constructive advice. Keep up the work, I would like to see a "the Cell 3", just put some more work into keeping it user friendly.

Click Fest 3

"well made but doesnt do anything for me"

submission: Click Fest 3
date: August 24, 2008

I like my games to have actual game play. This isnt a "real" game, there isn't any motivation for me to click, other than to beat someone elses time.

But yeah, I guess its down to personal preference. I personally find this sort of game very boring.

Escape the Den

"Nice job for first game"

submission: Escape the Den
date: August 20, 2008

Awesome job for a first submission. I am a big fan of escape games and have made a few myself (you may have heard of cube core/ prism core, currently working on my 4th).
From my personal experience both playing the games and making them, the games are generally more enjoyable when they require less "pixel hunting", ie you dont want to hide something so well that you can only find it by clicking every single pixel.
This wasnt too bad, however the screwdriver and hairdryer were hidden so well that I dont think I would ever have found them if I hadn't peeked at your walkthrough.

I love the way you break away from the "norm" in regards to some of the puzzles/devices in the room, the capsule machine and shaking sphere thing were very nice, keeps the game interesting and stops it being just "another escape game".

Codes can be fun, but you dont want to bog people down with them. Finding ways to have locks and triggers work without codes can be very fun (nice example was the bit with the drawers and blue key".

Anyway keep up the good work, hope to see another game from you soon! :D

Author's Response:

You made the Core games!? You're genius; I love those!

Thanks for the comments. I realized getting the screwdriver and hairdryer were a bit challenging, I tried to make the hairdryer more noticeable by showing a message on the inventory when you hover over the area... but it's still not noticed too well.

I kinda rushed into all the codes and puzzles too. If I could make the game again, I definitely would have added another non-numerical puzzle.

Thanks again for the advice!

Ski Toll Drop

"Bugged and boring"

submission: Ski Toll Drop
date: August 18, 2008

Sorry, dont know if this is your first game or not, but it really isnt very fun.

Plus clicking on any of the signs that say "insert logo here" take you to a blank screen that you can't get out of. Game just seems unfinished, and as if its copied from a generic game template or tutorial or something.

Author's Response:

We sent this game to many sponsors first. To prevent fraud, we put it PLACE LOGO HERE so they know where logos can go and won't try to put it on there website. We accidentally submitted the wrong version.

"Not bad"

submission: Zwingo
date: December 6, 2007

It was ok, but I got bored by the end of level 7. Not enough variety or challenge. Also it didnt seem to make much difference if the big ball in the middle got knocked out or not, I had the ball get knocked out twice but nothing happened and it eventually got knocked back in again. I think the objective of the game is a little unclear, even though i read the instructions.

Some variety such as different types of enemy (not just black balls, maybe diff colours which have different properties like magnetic, homing, wiggly lines, heat seeking etc :P).
If you took this down and spent a few more days on it to make it a bit more exciting/interesting, then you would have a decent game on your hands. At the moment tho its just not interesting enough to keep me playing for longer than 5 minutes.

Rhythm Test

"it's not really a game is it?"

submission: Rhythm Test
date: December 3, 2007

What kind of people do you think like to sit there clapping their hands for fun? No interactivity, very minimal graphics, very bad idea, not fun at all.

Come on, if you want to make a flash game, at least come up with a good idea first.

Azumanga - Rockstars

"Damn that was awesome!"

date: November 30, 2007

Really nice work, love azumanga and you drew the characters really well. The animation was great also, really well put together.

My only criticism is that you didnt upload an icon for this movie, which is a shame because a lot of people wont even bother to view an entry on the portal which hasnt got an icon (usually those movies are just worthless spam or stick fights).

Crimson Planet

"Nice Game"

submission: Crimson Planet
date: November 11, 2007

Hey, I'm the creator of the cube and sphere core games, so I am very familiar with making this type of game.
Your puzzles are all very original and refreshing, although I have a few constructive comments you may wish to take on board for future reference:
On puzzles which require you to go to several different screens in order to work them out, it is quite frustrating to have the game reset any changes you made to the puzzle each time you switch viewpoints to check something. Typical example of this is the sudoku puzzle, short of memorizing every colour and number, there is no way to fill this in all at once, however every time you switch to check the number, the puzzle forgets any digits you have already entered. This can be easily fixed by using global variables and getting the digit MC to check on load what the variable is, and starting from that point.

Another comment would be that you released a demo of this a week or so ago, and only added 2 more puzzles. Its quite dissapointing, was hoping for a slightly longer game (although yes I am aware how much these games take out of you to make, so I can understand why it isnt so long :P).

Graphics were all very nice, good stylised feel to them, sounds were also very nice. The matching animals to sounds puzzle was good (god some of those pictures and sounds freaked me out :P).

Well, wishing you all the best with your next game (you can't stop after only one of these, they are too addictive to make ^^), hope some of my comments are useful.

November 11, 2007

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review, and yes I know what you mean, they are addicting to make :D

I really liked the fact that people found the tv room with it's animals and sounds creepy. You see, this style of point and click game was an experiment for me. This one is a trippy one, my last one was a horror one. I think I prefer scaring people rather then attempting to 'wow' them.

My next game will probably be a horror PnC just like my first one.

Oh, and i suck at AS. Everything I've learnt has been self taught and I'm still learning even today, I don't understand anything about those 'var' commands or like global variables and stuff. If you could help by sending me a PM on somewhere on the net I can learn that stuff, I'd appreciate it greatly.

Thanks again,
HarraH
